On May 1, 2002 in the middle of the night, an electrical short caused a major fire in the Gymnastics Training Hall at RUOR, the Olympic Training Center of Uzbekistan. The men's gym was totally destroyed and the women's gym suffered considerable smoke and water damage.

These gyms are the training centers for the national team, only a handful of smaller gyms exist around the country for gymnastics and they all have inadequate equipment for the international master of sport (elite) athletes. The work to repair the structure, clean the damage, and replace the lost equipment will be extensive and expensive.
