Alisher Kurpanov Diagnosed with Leukemia

November 5, 2002 - Alisher Kurpanov Updates

Another test was performed on Alisher Kurpanov on the 8th day of his treatment, which showed he was taking the medication very well. Alisher is receiving medicine all the time (24hrs/day) for this initial inpatient period. He is already showing improvement in his general health.

The family is very pleased with the hospital -- a comfortable room, good food, good doctors, etc. The room for Bakhodir is only a five minute walk from the hospital, and includes free meals. They are still searching for grants and need all the financial support they can get.

Oksana won the Bundesliga again last weekend. Her team (Toyota - Kuln) also took first place. Now Oksana and Svetlana have returned to Tashkent to prepare for the World Championships in Hungary.

October 26 , 2002 - New tests confirm leukemia.

New tests on Alisher Kurpanov have confirmed the presence of leukemia, with zero chance to survive without treatment. The chance to heal Alisher with the treatment they have chosen is about 80%. Chemotherapy has already started and he has made excellent progress. The first part of the therapy will take 64 days. For the first three weeks Alisher must reside in the hospital. After this period the family will live in an apartment which was offered to them by the hospital ,during which Alisher will be treated twice a day. Throughtout the entire therapy period his prognosis will be surveyed through bone marrow samples. In total, Professor Berchold expects a duration for the therapy of approximately six months.

If you wish to send a check contribution towards Alisher's treatment, please send to the usual address posted below. Please make the checks out to Team UZB. If you wish to send a card to Oksana's family, please send them to the same address. All cards received by November 12 will be taken directly to Oksana in Hungary. October 23 , 2002 - Update on Alisher Kurpanov's treatment.

The Cologne University Hospital wants a guaranteed payment of 120,000 euros in order to begin treatment of Alisher Kurpanov. With the help of the university president, Peter Bruggeman (father of Lisa Bruggeman and professor at the university) has convinced them to begin treatment immediately, with funds coming from some grant at a later time.

Alisher began treatment today and both he and Bakhodir are staying at the hospital for the next three weeks. Then they will move to an apartment that they have secured nearby and go in for daily outpatient treatments, followed by another round of inpatient treatments. Total estimated time to be spent in Germany is estimated at 6 months. One of the German team coaches who is a native Russian speaker is accompanying them to their sessions with the doctors to provide translation.

Tomorrow, they should have the results of new blood and bone tests done in Germany to get a more precise diagnosis.

They are currently trying to secure funding for the treatments from Olympic Solidarity movement and also from private sources. They will be setting up a fund in Germany for donations. Donations can also be made to the Team UZB fund (we will forward all the donations to the same pool). Today Oksana left for the Glasgow competition, but she will return to Cologne afterwards.
